 Start-up of a User Group

On the 20th of February, a motley crowd gathered at Radisson SAS Royal Park in Frösundavik. The reason was the startup of RAIN (Rationals användargrupp i Norden) and the seminars that were offered as a bonus. A couple of weeks before, we had all received an invitation that presented the idea of having a group where users of Rationals products could meet without any commercial interests involved. The incitement to the user group came from a group of active Swedish users who were contacted by Rational at the user conference in San Francisco in February 1997. Together, they formed a work group, working with the form of a Scandinavian/Nordic user group. The result was the regulations of a user group and a user group conference in Stockholm in February 1998.

Product updates from Rational

The seminar program started of with Johan Näsman who talked about new product releases from Rational. In a rising tempo he worked his way through Requisite Pro 3.0, Rose 98, SQA, ClearCase, ClearGuide, ClearDDTS and ClearQuest and managed to keep within his time limits.

What is an architecture and what is not

Coming all the way from Vancouver, Philippe Kruchten gave a wonderful discourse about software architecture and the process of creating it. He killed most of the prejudices of this, often highly infected, subject and threw in quite a bit of humour while doing it.

Sum up

I really enjoyed the day, as I think all of us did. It feels great to be able to gather this much experience and competence in a non-commercial organisation. Even if the connection to Rational is pretty obvious, the focus of not being some sort of fan club to Rational is clear to all of us. I am really glad that I got to be a part of the birth of RAIN.
